What is different about coverage in Michigan
Michigan Medicaid, including the Healthy Michigan Plan, is run by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and Michigan uses the federal HealthCare.gov Marketplace rather than a state-run exchange. Michigan Medical Insurance is free to use for Michigan callers working through Medicare, ACA, life, or supplemental coverage questions.
- Michigan Medicaid, including the Healthy Michigan Plan (Michigan's Medicaid expansion program), is administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) -- MDHHS is the right place to start if your Michigan Medicaid eligibility changed.
- Michigan does not run its own ACA exchange, so Michigan marketplace shopping and subsidy questions go through the federal HealthCare.gov Marketplace, which also screens applicants for Healthy Michigan Plan eligibility.
- Free Medicare counseling is available in Michigan through MMAP (Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program) at 800-803-7174, separate from Michigan Medical Insurance's own free phone help.
Worth knowing: Michigan's Medicaid expansion program has its own distinct brand name, the Healthy Michigan Plan, rather than just being referred to as expanded Medicaid -- worth knowing since Michigan-specific materials and application flows generally use that name.

Where do I shop for ACA health plans in Michigan?
Michigan residents shop through HealthCare.gov (federal Marketplace) (https://www.healthcare.gov/michigan/). An independent agent such as Lander LLC can explain the plans for you, but the marketplace is the only place premium tax credits are applied.
How do I apply for Medicaid in Michigan?
Medicaid in Michigan is run through Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) (https://www.michigan.gov/mdhhs/assistance-programs/medicaid). Eligibility depends on income, household size and other factors, and it is decided by the state, not by an insurance agency.
Who regulates insurance in Michigan?
Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) (https://www.michigan.gov/difs/consumers/insurance/health-insurance) regulates insurance companies and agents in Michigan. You can use it to check that an agent or company is licensed and to file a complaint.
Is there free, unbiased Medicare help in Michigan?
Yes. MMAP (Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program) (800-803-7174) offers free Medicare counseling through the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), separate from any insurance agency.
Does Michigan Medical Insurance cost anything to use?
There is no cost to call or to speak with an agent. Insurance premiums and plan costs are set by the insurance companies and are separate from our help.
